Dear Friends of Hannah, Dr. Jim Olson, and Seattle Children’s Hospital,
In honor of 11-year-old Hannah Hunt, and countless other children and adults struggling with brain cancer, we are hosting a fundraiser on March 19th, 2010, 7 pm at Grace Church on Bainbridge Island, WA. This event titled, “Hannah’s Hopeful Hearts”, will raise funds for Dr. Jim Olson’s lab in Seattle. Dr. Olson is an attending pediatric hematology-oncologist at Seattle Children’s Hospital and the lead researcher of the Olson Lab in Seattle. 100% of the donations from this event will go to the Olson Lab. As Jim says, “The most innovative work we do is supported by our patient families and their friends. These donations enable us to conduct ‘high risk, high payoff’ experiments that will fundamentally improve the outcomes for children with brain cancer.”
As one of the speakers at this event, Dr. Olson will share his latest research which focuses on developing new therapies for pediatric brain tumors, improving the tools with which neurosurgeons can detect brain cancer cells, and studying the molecular and genetic-based causes of brain diseases. One of the Olson Lab’s primary objectives is the study and eradication of medulloblastoma. Medulloblastoma is the most common malignant brain tumor in children.
And it is Hannah’s tumor.
Hannah was diagnosed with a brain tumor on November 5, 2007. Following surgery and treatment at Seattle Children’s and the UW Medical Center, including 16 months of intensive chemotherapy and full cranial/spinal radiation, Hannah was pronounced cancer-free. She also participated in a nationwide study, chaired by Dr. Olson and based on his laboratory studies, to evaluate the effectiveness of a new drug on this tumor. Despite receiving the most aggressive therapies available, Hannah’s cancer returned in May, 2009. While there is no known cure for relapsed medulloblastoma, we do believe that Dr. Olson and his colleagues have the means and the inspiration to find such a cure. As a world-renowned authority on this brain tumor, the Olson Lab is potentially the most miracle-producing facility in our own backyard.
Inspired by Dr. Olson’s quest, Hannah’s fundraiser will feature two other individuals who have been climbing their own mountains. Cheryl Broyles is a nearly 10-year survivor of a “terminal” brain cancer. Believing it is now her life’s work to bring hope and encouragement to others, Cheryl shares her story of survival which includes a very holistic, positive, faith-based approach to life. She also chronicled her cancer journey and celebratory climb up Mt. Shasta with her husband in her book, “Life’s Mountains”. Cheryl is the living, breathing manifestation of hope and miracles.
Facing life and death experiences on his expeditions, local mountaineer Ed Viesturs shares his own stories of triumph and tragedy in the mountains accompanied by incredible photography…always with heart and humility, knowing what is most important in this life. As America’s leading high-altitude mountaineer, Ed has written about his adventures and success in climbing the world’s highest peaks that are over 8000 meters in his book, “No Shortcuts to the Top” and in his new book, “K2, Life and Death on the World’s Most Dangerous Mountain”.
Since November ’07, Hannah has been climbing the mountain of her life. We are incredibly grateful that these three inspiring individuals, Dr. Olson, Cheryl Broyles and Ed Viesturs will come together on the evening of March 19th to support Hannah and the cause of finding a cure for pediatric brain tumors. Giving to Dr. Olson’s Lab is the best way to help Hannah, our family, and so many others. We hope that you will join us for this special event. The reception and buffet supper will be provided. 100% of the donations will go to the Olson Lab. No tickets will be sold; donations will be received at the event or you may donate online if you are unable to join us for this evening.
We’d like to join your friends and family on Friday evening. Kate experienced changes following a brain infection which altered her direction in life. She was just your age, Hannah. Kate wants you and your family to know that she understands the path you bravely follow with such a happy expression and sunny greeting for all. Who’s your four legged friend?
This will be a very special evening for you. If we can help in any way to assist with the fundraiser we’d like to contribute?
